Invitation to the 2022 EKU Faculty Writing Retreat

Do you have a writing project or grant application that is in your research pipeline? Is it time to start something new? Need to put the finishing touches on your latest draft? Or are you a new professor who needs to get your research agenda off the ground? Are you planning on participating in the Faculty Scholar’s Institute (Register here!) and want to build off that momentum the following week?
The Provost’s Office, CEDET, EKU Libraries, and The Noel Studio for Academic Creativity has partnered to offer an Annual Faculty Writing Retreat May 23, 24, and 25. This retreat will be held with apprpriate social-distance and a private space in the EKU Library.

Think of this retreat as an “academic incarceration.” We provide you with a private space in the Main Library - away from the distractions of your office – to focus only on your writing.
In return, you agree to write, not grade, not check email or social media, or not leave the retreat for other meetings. Arriving at the retreat with very specific writing tasks, whether conceptualizing and drafting a new manuscript or completing final revisions to a long-standing work, will allow you to maximize this opportunity. You would also agree to give a brief summary of your work at the end of each day to the rest of the group.
Faculty members that provide a brief, half-page summary of their work on the last day, as well as proof of manuscript or project acceptance within a year of the retreat, will receive $500 toward their professional development.

When is the deadline for application? Friday, April 22, 2022
The EKU Writer’s Retreat is accepting a limited number of applications and will provide a private study room in the Main Library for your exclusive use. The EKU Libraries faculty will also be available to assist you. You must bring all of the materials needed for your writing project, including your laptop. Computers will not be provided.
Monday and Tuesday morning, you will sign in by 8:30 a.m. and get to work. Snacks and beverages will be available in a common room throughout the day. At 11:30 a.m., the group will break for lunch - everyone willbe on their own - reconvening at 12:30 together. From 12:30-3:30 will be back to work; from 3:30-4:00 will be summaries of work completed.
If you have a collaborator on campus, you may both apply or you may apply and invite your collaborator to join you for a portion of the retreat. You are expected to focus intensively on writing for at least six hours each day.
Wednesday will start at 8:30 a.m. and end with lunch and debrief at 11:30 a.m., where you will give a final report and outline future plans toward submission.

In selecting participants, preference will be given to faculty preparing for a major review (tenure or promotion), to new faculty establishing a writing program, and to faculty in transition. Selected participants will be notified by May 6th.
